But as Gilberto herself used to say when talking about the song's initial success, people need romance, and something dreamy for distraction. There was a sadness in the air, of course. Perhaps especially so in the namesake Ipanema neighborhood of Rio de Janeiro, where on Tuesday, buskers could be heard performing it near the restaurant where songwriters Antônio Carlos Jobim and Vinícius de Moraes first wrote the tune for a particular teen they liked to watch walk by. These days, Brazilians and tourists alike fondly remember her and her song. But she wisely never looked back, and made her life and career in the U.S." "Brazil was cruel to her and didn't accept her success," he says, speaking through an interpreter. While Gilberto was a hit in the U.S., where she would eventually live, journalist and bossa nova historian Ruy Castro says the same wasn't true back home. Her soulful sound would become a major influence on countless other artists, including Karen Carpenter and Sade. "Astrud was the first pop radio voice to sing in that soft, intimate, sensual fashion that engineered everything," he says. Guitarist Paul Ricci, a close friend, says Gilberto was a champion of the New York 1960s and '70s jazz scene. In 2008, the Latin Recording Academy honored her with a Lifetime Achievement Award. After splitting with her husband, Gilberto embarked on a solo career, recording dozens of albums and collaborating with the likes of Quincy Jones and Chet Baker. Getz/Gilberto won four Grammys, including record of the year for its breakout song. "The Girl From Ipanema" catapulted both Gilberto and Brazil's bossa nova music onto the American music scene. "But I have never envisioned it as becoming an important thing in my life, or the beginning of a career, or anything like it." "I had fun doing it, and I enjoy being a part of it," she explained in a 1978 interview with WHYY's Fresh Air. And by her own admission, what came next was a surprise. Though she wasn't credited for her vocal debut, and reportedly made only $120 for the session, she recorded her own solo version of the song soon after. Derisively, Getz took credit for her participation, and even cracked at the time that she was just a housewife who got a break. ![]() Gilberto was said to have the best English in the room that day. ![]() Red String Bracelet - Best Feng Shui Bracelet for Good Luck.Black Obsidian Pixiu Bracelet - Best Feng Shui Bracelet for Wealth and Money.Jade Wu Lou Bracelet - Best Feng Shui Bracelet for Health.Whether you're looking for a feng shui bracelet for health, wealth, love, or other aspects of your life, you can find the most powerful ones here. Some of the key benefits of the Google Chromecast over similar media devices include: Stream apps such as BBC iPlayer, YouTube and Facebook.Listen to music through an app like Spotify. Then the Chromecast Ultra is an evolved version of the second-generation model, but features upgraded hardware that supports the streaming of 4K resolution content, hence the name “ultra” for “ultra-HD” viewing. The core difference is that the Chromecast Audio is specifically for audio streaming apps such as Spotify or Sonos. The 1st Generation Chromecast was followed in 2015 by a 2nd Generation Chromecast, as well as the Chromecast Audio (2015) and Chromecast Ultra (2016). For example, if you were looking at images on Dropbox on your laptop, you could hit a button to “cast” that screen to view on your TV instead, which makes it popular for consumers to use at home in order to fling content to their screen. However, it does have other features, such as the ability to mirror anything playing in a Google Chrome web browser to a screen. Unfortunately, media devices have come a long way since the Chromecast and as a result, we don't recommend it as the best device for digital signage. Bridging the gap between smart TVs and dumb ones, by plugging the Chromecast into the back of a TV, the TV gained the ability to stream live content, videos and movies through apps. The idea behind the Chromecast was that it made a “dumb” TV screen or PC monitor smart. Most TVs couldn’t be linked to the internet, or used to stream content through apps such as Netflix or YouTube. ![]() The reason, was that a few years back, Smart TVs were not the norm. All that said, if you've got a cable subscription with HBO already, HBO Go is still a fantastic functioning Chromecast app, too. After its short, three-month exclusivity contract with Apple came to a close in August 2015, it rocketed to the top as one of the best Chromecast-compatible streaming apps out there. There was just one problem with it: HBO Go required a cable subscription. It wasn't until HBO Now was announced that our eyes were opened to the bigger picture.Īs a standalone streaming service like Netflix and Hulu, HBO Now unshackled itself premium cable packages, allowing users to watch shows like Game of Thrones and Silicon Valley without buying a whole cable package. Certainly plenty of ☕️.Mission Control’s other star feature, Spaces, gives you up to 16 full-size monitors. But if you feel like testing your dock hopping mettle with all the unused displays stuffed in your closets and crawl spaces, you might need several of these and a few of these. That’d be just plain silly! Unless that’s your thing – no judgment here. Have you ever run into quirks or am I the only one? Perhaps you have some deeper insight or a few tricks up your sleeve? If so, let me know! Or that I have 17 monitors encircling me like a Neil Peart drum kit?Įither way, I’m very interested in hearing about your own dock moving experiences. Nothing?! The dock doesn’t move back?! Here’s what I think might be happening… Though the dock magically appears on the new screen, the display itself isn’t actually made active until an event occurs (such as clicking on a window or the desktop). Go back to the original screen and try moving your cursor to the bottom. Now slide your cursor to the bottom of said screen, and voila! The dock should appear on the new screen while it simultaneously disappears from the old.You can tell which of your displays are inactive because the menu bar at the top of the screen will be greyed out.
